Tackling a bathroom remodeling effort is a good way to improve the value and functionality of your home. Getting inspired for the job, though, can be a different matter. If you're looking for inspiration, here are four ideas that'll get you pointed in the right direction.
Paint It Black
Seeing bathrooms that are white or tilted toward lighter and softer colors is pretty much the norm. Unfortunately, these spaces can give a sense of being antiseptic and boring.
If you want to break things up and head a different direction, there's a lot to be said for going with a black bathroom. Bear in mind that dark spaces need a lot of accents to make them not feel claustrophobic, so look to include contrasting elements like white countertops, checker floor tiles, and open glass shower enclosures to give the room a feeling of space. In some cases, especially very small bathrooms, you may need even more bright elements to open things up.
Use Mirrors
The focal point of a bathroom is often difficult to define. One way to handle this problem easily is to make one or two large mirrors the focal point, usually above the sink or a vanity. Add top-quality lighting above the mirror to provide an accent and to make better use of the mirror. You can also use multiple mirrors to move natural light around a smaller room, creating the illusion of more space.
Go Retro
Adding retro elements to a bathroom can make it into a real talking point about a house. Some options include industrial chic components, such as rusted metal bars, and old-school design elements, such as subway tiles. Little fixtures can make a big difference, too, with options like Victorian-style handles and showerheads providing simple and speedy ways to remodel. Mixing and matching retro aspects with modernist design principles can also allow you to put your own impression on a bathroom remodeling project.
Install New Cabinets and Countertops
We tend to think of cabinets and countertops as bigger issues for kitchen renovations. But the reality is that many bathroom remodeling professionals will tell you that they can make for fast solutions in bath spaces, too. These are large elements, and they can be used to create contrast. If you have a bathroom that is too light, for example, you can use darker wood cabinets and counters to make things pop out more.
